Where did the month of March go? It just seems like I wrote up my February Happenings just yesterday.

I am still sticking with the two challenges that I joined. The first one is the Buy a Book Read a Book challenge that Amy is hosting. The book I bought and read was Great Hair by Nick Arrojo wrote. You might recognize that name. He is the hair dresser on TLC's What Not to Wear Show. You can see my review Here. I got inspiration for my new look from his book. To see the new me you can see the New Look

The other challenge that I am taking part in is the 100+ Reading Challenge hosted by J.Kaye. For the month of March I read only 8 books. This brings the total of books read to 31. I have reviewed all the books but three as they are set to post this week.

I was lucky this month with books coming to the door. I got 23 books. One of the books was a won and nine of the books were for Michael. The nine books that Michael got have all been read and reviewed on this blog.

My book buying was a little more then the previous month. I bought two: American Wife and Twilight. Yes I caved and bought the first book. I figured since I read the Kitty books that I would try this book. For Michael I bought him six books from scholastic school orders. Four were french books and the other two were English ones.

Also in March I got together with Tina, Donna and Avis. We met up at our regular little cafe for hot drinks and some lively discussions. I came home with five books. Here is what Books.

Contest wise on my blog this month I am giving away ONE copy of Girls In Trucks and this ends April 13th and the other giveaway is for ONE copy of April Fools Day and this ends April 3rd.

I was very lucky this month and got four awards. These are all special to me because I know that some are reading my blog and I truly appreciate them. Thanks to Lily for the I love your blog, Lily and Luanne for the Este blog investe award,Wrighty for the Sisterhood Award and Daisy for Lets be Friends Award. These are some really great blogs that I always check out and if you haven't looked at them then I am telling you you should check them out.

Also this month I shared photos of my son's books. Yes you read that right books. He has two small book cases completely filled as well as a shelf in his closet. I think I might have to pick up another bookcase for him very soon. You can see the pictures Here. I will be posting pictures of my books perhaps in April as a few people have been asking to see them.

That was my month how did yours turn out.

Find Your A B C's Review

PUB DATE: March 3, 2009

This book was orginally done in 1973 and today its still a classic for little ones learning about letters and words.

Michael loves Richard Scarry books so when he found out that he was going to get to read and review this for me he was really happy. He was even happier when I told him that it was his to keep and we wouldn't have to return it.

If you are a fan of Richard Scarry you will recognize Sam and Dudley, they are the stars of The Great Pie Robbery. Guess what? They are on the case again! Although this time they’re searching for the alphabet. Sam and Dudley ask the readers to help them out and here’s how you can help, throughout the book, the words for a variety of objects appear next to their pictures and on every page just one letter of the alphabet is highlighted. That letter is always shown in color.

This is a great book about learning the alphabet and words. Michael loved taking part in the acitivity and he was asking through out the book what Sam and Dudley were going to do with the letters. Even though we have borrowed this book numerous times it was nice to see the element of surprise in it.

Thank You to Sterling Kids for sending us this book. We love it!

Although Richard Scarry passed away in 1994, his son has taken over for him. Richard's writting career took off in 1949 when he had his big break with the book Two Little Miners and since then he has contributed more then 300 books to children and adults. He has sold more then two hundred million copies in thirty languages. With the distinctive style of drawings they have become the most recognizable to millions of people in the world.

Proud Mommy Moment

The above picture is of Michael's cernicreation craft he did at lunch time at school. It took my two Tuesday's to complete it. The bowl was bought and all he had to do was put the polymer clay on the sides of the bowl and to make the dog. This was just so cute that I wanted to share it with my readers. He is very proud of it that he couldn't wait to bring it home. Its now sitting proudly on our coffee table.

Girls In Trucks Give Away

Full Description of the book:
Sarah Walters is a less-than-perfect debutante. She tries hard to follow the time-honored customs of the Charleston Camellia Society, as her mother and grandmother did, standing up straight in cotillion class and attending lectures about all the things that Camellias don't do. (Like ride with boys in pickup trucks.)
But Sarah can't quite ignore the barbarism just beneath all that propriety, and as soon as she can she decamps South Carolina for a life in New York City. There, she and her fellow displaced Southern friends try to make sense of city sophistication, to understand how much of their training applies to real life, and how much to the strange and rarefied world they've left behind.
When life's complications become overwhelming, Sarah returns home to confront with matured eyes the motto "Once a Camellia, always a Camellia"- and to see how much fuller life can be, for good and for ill, among those who know you best.
Girls in Trucks introduces an irresistable, sweet, and wise voice that heralds the arrival of an exciting new talent.

Thanks to Valerie at Hachette I am able to give away one book to a lucky reader of my blog.

Rules of the contest are:
-Must have a valid Canadian or US mailing address. Sorry no PO Boxes.
-Leave a comment on here for 1 entry. 5 bonus entries if you follow me on twitter. 5 bonus entries if you follow my blog and I am on your blog roll.
-Contest will start today March 30th and will run until midnight on April 13th, 2009.

Quiet Bunny Review

PUB DATE: March 3,2009

Thank You to Sterling Kids for sending us this book to read and review. Michael loved the book. The illustrations are so cute and life like. This is the first book that Lisa has actually illustrated and written.

More than anything in the world the Quiet Bunny loves the sounds of the forest. The birds chirping and the wind whispering through the leaves. When the sun is setting its Quiet Bunny's favorite time of all because all the bunnies gather to listen to the night song. The crickets start off first then the owl, the snake, the mosquitoes, the bull frog and the wolf all sing their song. The Quiet Bunny opens his mouth to join in but no sound comes from him. He wishes upon a star and the next day still nothing. So he decides to wander the woods copying the animals and their sounds but still nothing. As the sun is setting The Owl speaks to the Quiet bunny telling him that he was watching him all day and saying that no matter how hard you try you won't make a sound cause he was a Quiet Bunny and that he has to find his own sound and be who you are. So the bunny begins to wonder who he is. As he is hopping around he comes upon a fallen tree as he jumps over it his paw hits it and THUMP. The bunny has discovered his sound..Thump!

Michael loved the book. I think this is perfect for his age group. Funny enough when I asked him what he thought the story meant he said that we are all different and do things differently that we have to be who we are not. For the bunny it was dancing to the beat of his own music and not the other animals.

A World Full of Ghosts Review

PUB DATE: February 2009

A World Full of Ghosts is a book about a world full of ghosts. The book talks about the ghosts that have been haunting the world for hundreds of years. In France its the Ankou the Skeleton and its believed that Ankou appears when someone dies. In Alaska its the Dancing Ahkiyyina. The Inuit know that when the ground begins to shake, the sea rises and boats tip over that its Ahkiyyina dancing. Ireland has The Wailing Banshee and its been said that when they hear her someone has died. Jamaica has The Barking Duppy, in Japan its the Shojo, in England and Scotland there is Silky. Silky is a good ghost she does household chores when people are asleep but if there is a lazy person in the house then she plays tricks and messes up their room. Gee I wish Silky would come and visit me. Don't you?

The other places talked about in the book is Banks Island, China, India, Finland, Scotland, Paraguay, Africa, Hawaii, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, West Africa, Argentina and North America.

The author also include ghost stories written by young readers which was really nice to see in the book. Kids have great imaginations and are so creative.

Thanks to Stella at Annick Press for sending us this book to read. Unfortunately Michael didn't want to read it because he said it was too scary for him. So I had the honor of reading this book myself.

Charis Cotter the author is Canadian and she grew up beside a cemetery. She lives in Toronto and Newfoundland. So when I heard that she was an East Coast girl I had to have the book.

Another thing I found out when reading this was that the illustrator is from Quebec. It was nice to see that.

Chicken, Pig, Cow Review

PUB DATE: August 2008

The book is told in the point of view of three toys: chicken, pig and cow.

Pig, Chicken and Cow live in a warm and cozy barn that a girl has made for them out of sticks. Even though the girl forgot to make a door, chicken, pig and cow think their home is perfect. Unfortunitly the only thing that isn't perfect is the dog. He lives outside, and his drool makes it feel as if it's raining in the barn.

Then one day, they decide to go exploring, leaving Cow behindbecause only pig and chicken were able to get out. Before long, cow hears the dog and then suddenly there is a crash and the barn tips over. The dog is very big and Cow is terrified. The dog wants to play. The dog becomes their friend. The best of it now is that two sticks have been knocked free so now their barn is indeed perfect -- front door.

Michael really loved this book. He was so cute he asked if he did that would his animals come to live. He also said that no matter how scary something might look that it might not be that scary.

Thank You to Stella at Annick Press for sending us this great Canadian book. Ruth Ohi lives in Toronto.

The Bears We Know Review

PUB DATE: February 1, 2009

The book starts with a house at the end of our road. We find out that its a big, brown house with lots of windows and a long staircase. Inside the house lives bears, but no one has seen them but they know what the bears do.

The bears sleep in, they sit in the windowsill and drink coffee while picking food out of their fur, they growl when anyone gets close, they pick up old couches fromt he dump and bring them home, their exercise is jumping on the couches till the springs are gone, they watch cartoons and game shows, they don't go to school or work and eat whatever they want. The bears go out before lunch wearing tight bathing suits and singing, pretending they are in a sauna. They never clean up they throw sawdust around if the place starts to look too clean.

Michael thought that the bears were lucky because of the life they lead and he said he wished he was a bear. He liked that the bears didn't follow the rules and that they did what ever they wanted to.

This is another great Canadian Children's author. She is a teacher, author and musician. She lives in British Columbia.

Thank you to Stella at Annick Press for sending us this book to read. Michael really enjoyed the book.

My Friend Mei Jing Review

PUB DATE: February 1,2009

Mei Jing came to Monifa's school and they've been best friends ever since first grade. They're both artistic. They both love the color purple. They love to play at each other's houses. When they play at Monifa's they play dress up, and when they play at Mei Jing's house they draw pictures.

Mei Jing gets a new puppy in March and the girls take the dog to the park so that he can run around. The girls both want to be veterinarians when they grow up.

When Chinese New Year comes the girls learn the Dragon Dance and they perform it at the community center for everyone. After the party Mei Jing's parents give the girls red envelopes with money. They have made these at school and put chocolate coins in them. Mei Jing gets these for birthday presents and when she gets good grades.

When Monifa's birthday comes she invites Mei Jing. Monifa gets cornrows in her hair and Mei Jing wants them too but she doesn't cause it takes too long and her hair is too slippery so she gets pig tails with ribbons. The girls go out to play and Monifa's mother has her African blanket hanging on the line so the girls make it into a tent. The pretend they are roasting marshmallows.

Michael thought that book was okay but it was a little girlish for him. He enjoyed listening to it but I think he might have preferred if it was about boys.

Another Thank You goes out to Stella at Annick Press for sending us this book.

Big or Little Review

PUB DATE: February 2009

Big or Little is 25 years old. It was first published in 1983. This is another book I didn't read when it first came out cause I was a little to old for picture books. Michael really enjoyed the book alot.

This is a great story about growing up. Michael said that he could really relate to this story cause sometimes you are to little to do certain things but yet you are big enough to do other things.

Toby feels like he is big some days. Especially when he can pour his own milk, pushes #7 in the elevator, when he gets to shave with his dad, when he helps his mom wash the car, holding the door open, riding his bike to the part, being polite, remembering to bring his library book back on the right day, reading some words, printing his name, sharing his toys, having a birthday, pj's that don't fit and being able to stay up late.

The things that make Toby feel little is when he spills the milk, wetting his bed, having to sit in a car seat, getting lost at the grocery store, being scared of a dog, having a brother telling him to go away, an aunt who gives him bunny feet pjs, and having to be carried to bed when you fall asleep on the couch.

Michael likes to be little but he also likes to be big too.

This is another great book by Kathy Stinson. We are looking forward to reading more by her. She is a great Canadian author.

Thanks to Stella at Annick Press for sending us this classic children's book it will be cherished for many years to come.

The Ten Year Nap Review

PUB DATE: April 2008

Thank You to Caitlin at FSB for sending me this book.

I was curious to read it when Caitlin sent me the email about the book. I am a stay at home mom and I have been out of the work place for almost 7 years now. For me it was important that I stayed home to raise my son. I grew up in a house where my mother stayed home, as did most mother's in the 70's. I watched friends and family who had kids and both parents worked and their kids went to daycare for the day. They would often say how they didn't have time at night to really spend with their kids. For me personally I wanted to stay home so that I could spend time with my son, cause I know there will be a day when he doesn't want me around.

Last year I put my son into a preschool to not only introduce him to school but to also gaining some Independence so that I could go back to work. That was suppose to be the plan for kinder garden. While he was at school I would work part time but that didn't happen because he didn't make the transition into school that well. If you know me then you know what a hard 6-8 weeks I had. So seeing that things are going a little better we started to talk about me going back to work in the fall of 09. My son has told me that right now he worries about having to go to after school daycare and how long a day he will have. So in the fall when I go back to work I think it will only be part time so that I am still able to be home when he gets off the bus instead of the daycare.

Anyways about the book its about four New York women who have decided to give up their careers so that they can stay home to raise there kids.

Amy ten years ago was a lawyer. She is married for 13 years. Her husband is a lawyer. Her plan was to have her son and then go back to work after her maternity leave but she had a change of plan. They managed to rearrange their fiances so that she could stay home. Ten years later seeing that her son is more independent and doesn't need her around she is wondering what to do.

Jill, Amy's best friend from college has left NYC to live in the burbs with her husband and daughter. Jill was unable to conceive so they adopted a little girl from Siberia. She misses her friends.

Roberta was an artist who had made her big break when she took time off to have her two kids. She manages to put her passion as an artist into her daily life to do arts and crafts with her kids. Perhaps that could be a venue she could think about.

Karen is the homemaker of the group. She is married and loves the idea of staying home and not having to work which is a shame as Karen is a math whiz who could probably make alot of money if she choices to work. She does go on interviews but always turns down positions that is offered to her.

As excited as I was to read the book I found it hard to read at times. I thought at times things dragged on and it seemed like it was a long chapter then a short one etc. I decided that perhaps in a few months I will pick it up to read again and maybe I will be able to enjoy it more.

Here are some other bloggers who have read the book:

**Kitty and The Midnight Hour Review

PUB DATE: November 2005

Thank you to Miriam at Hachette for sending me this book plus the other books in the series to read and for allowing me to take part in the March Book Tour. The March Book Tour is for Kitty and the Dead Man's Hand and Kitty Raises Hell.

I have to say first off that this isn't a genre of books that I typically read. They are so outside my comfort zone. With that being said I have to say that I am so happy that I took part in this tour cause I really enjoyed Kitty and the Midnight Hour. Looking forward to reading Kitty Goes to Washington and the rest of the series this week.

Kitty and the Midnight Hour introduces Kitty. Kitty is a midnight dj at KNOB radio station. She is also a werewolf. Kitty also reveals how she became a werewolf. (I won't say how so that I don't spoil the book for you.) Kitty is part of a pack. The others are becoming more werewolf and less human as they change almost nightly and she only allows herself to change monthly on a full moon.

One night while working she is tired of taking calls for lame song requests and tells the listeners nothing after the 90's. She decides to ask her listeners about the latest BatBoy article and what they think of the supernatural. Before she realizes it her show is a huge success.

This annoys the Vampires cause they feel as though Kitty has threatened their existence so they send someone to kill her. They think Kitty will expose them. When a dead boy appears in front of her apartment she is questioned by the police. Then before anyone realizes it more bodies are appearing all over the city.

Kitty is having a hard time dealing with her radio show, her pack who don't approve, helping the cops track down the responsible person in the deaths and trying to find the group of people who claim they can cure Vampires.

I have to stop cause I will end up spoiling the book for you. The book was fast paced and an easy quick read. Very light. There is always action happening so it keeps your interest throughout the book. I have to admit it was a bit gory but that is to be expected from the book. Also I want to mention that there is some mild sex in the book but nothing over the top.

Another great thing I noticed in the book was the playlist that is at the beginning of the book and her other books as well and the reason for it is that when Carrie was writing the book she listened to these songs for inspiration. I was wondering that when I saw it and wondered how it would play in but listening to the songs I see how she would get her inspiration from them.

Carrie Vaughn Blog Tour

Carrie Vaughn has written a series of six books about Kitty Norville who is a midnight shift DJ at a Denver radio station and she just happens to be a werewolf. Kitty is tired of all the lame requests for lame songs that she starts The Midnight Hour by accident. The show is a late night advice show for the supernaturally disadvantage. Before she knows it vampires, werewolves and witches from all over start to call in sharing there stories with her. Her show is a huge success.

The books in the series are:
Kitty and the Midnight Hour
Kitty Goes to Washington
Kitty Takes a Holiday
Kitty and the Silver bullet
Kitty and the Dead Man's Hand
Kitty Raises Hell

Red is Best Review

PUB DATE: September 2006

I have to thank Stella at Annick Press for sending me this book to read and review with Michael. He really enjoyed this book. Funny enough Michael knew what this book was about even before we opened it up to read it. It opened a great discussion we had about favorite colors and favorite things. Michael's favorite color is yellow and blue. Thankfully he doesn't have to dress in special items of clothes in that color but he does have favorite things he likes to wear.

Red is Best is over 25 years old. The story is about a little girl who loves the color red. She is getting ready to go out. She is putting on her red socks but her mother suggest white saying it will go better with her dress. The little girl feels as though she can do things better in her red socks.

She is putting on her red jacket but her mother says the blue one is warmer but the girl wants to be Little Red Riding Hood in her jacket.

She puts on her red boots but her mother says they are rain boots, but she wears them just the same. She puts on her red mitts that has holes and they make better snowballs then her brown ones do. Even when its bed time she has to wear red pjs cause they will keep the monsters away. She even has a red cup where juice tastes better in. Even when she paints she uses red because red is the best color in the world.

Another thing I loved is the fact that Kathy Stinson is a Canadian author. She lives in Guelph, Ontario with her husband. Kathy has written more then 25 books. I think its great to read home grown talent to our children and for us and to support that talent.

As a parent its amazing to see what kids will take too and it in turns ends up there favorite things. I know all kids will have a special blanket and they carry it around with them 24/7 thankfully for Michael as long as he had a blanket he was happy and it didn't have to be the same one daily.

The Dead Guy Review

PUB DATE: December 2008

Thanks to Dorothy at Pump Up Your Promo for sending me this book. I am sorry for the delay in posting this but this month has been a bad month with being sick.

Jack Thigpen is called into investigate what is believed to be a car insurance scam. Jack gets more then what he bargained for. In the beginning of the book Jack is diagnosed with CJD which is Creutzfeldt Jakob Disease. Its the human version of mad cow. I have to say that this touched a soft spot for me because this disease is very real and you can die from this. The reason I know this is because about 20 or so years ago my uncle died from this. It was very sad to watch such a healthy person die from this.

While Jack is investicating the possible car insurance scam he calls in his best friend Hal in to help him out but Hal ends up being killed. Jack vows to find the people responsible for killing Hal. While Jack is struggling to deal with the lose of Hal he is also struggling to deal with his own uncertain future.

Jack survives numerous attempts on his life from being shot at to surviving an explosion. Through it all Jack never dies. I really enjoyed this book. I found it too be a page turner and the story flowed with enough action, murder, and a kidnapping. Just when you think you figure out who is behind it all it changes so it keeps you on the edge of your seat. Another thing I enjoyed was that it took place in Detroit. A place I visted several years ago. It was the perfect setting for the book.

A new look

Well this past Friday I was tired of the way my hair was looking so I went and had it cut. I gave the hairdresser carte blanc to do what she wanted. I have to admit I had the Great Hair book with me and I showed her three styles I liked so she took it from there and this is the look I ended up with. I wasnt' sure at first but after a few hours I decided that I liked it. So what do you think?

The Very Hungry Caterpillar is 40 Years old

This year marks the 40th anniversary of The Very Hungry Caterpillar, which was published in 1969 and in honor of the 40th anniversary of Eric Carle’s much beloved children’s book, today has been deemed “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” Day.

This was something special that Eric Carle did for Google.

We love Eric Carle books. He is a great childrens author with about 70 books to his name. One of my son's favorites is The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Eric's books are the best they always have an educational element to the books which makes learning fun for kids. The illustrations are bright and colorful.

You can check out The Penguin Group for my great things. There is a video of Eric on the site.

Here is the offical Eric Carle Website

Happy Anniversary The Very Hungry Caterpillar and Happy 80th Birthday wishes to Eric Carle. May you continue to write many more great children books.
