I Am Not Emmanuelle Review

Today Annick Press launches a new series of books for young adults called the Single Voice. These novellas were originally published in France. Each little story talks about issues that teens face today. As of today there is six novellas in a three book flip book format. Another two books are scheduled for the fall.

Today I am proud to be able to take part in the launch of these novellas.

TITLE: I Am Not Emmanuelle
AUTHOR: Carine Tardieu
PUB DATE: 2010
PAGES: 64
PUBLISHER: Annick Press

ABOUT THE BOOK:
Yes, it’s true, I stole a package of chewing gum, but I didn’t do it on purpose. I mean, I didn’t plan it, it was the circumstances that made me do it. Mom had given me a fifty-dollar bill and a list of things to buy at Naturalia: dish soap, tofu, sausage (“Make sure you check the expiration date,” she told me), dates, broccoli. When I passed the candy rack, just before the checkout, I saw this package of fancy chewing gum that I really wanted, $3.50 for a package of eighteen. Natural banana-flavored gum, 100 percent organic, surely Mom, if she had been there, would have bought it for me. So I put it in my shopping bag and got in line to pay.

Thank You to Joanna from Annick Press for providing the photos used in this post and please note that ABOUT THE BOOK was taken from the Annick Press's Website

.

MY THOUGHTS:
Thanks to Joanna for sending me this book to read, review and for allowing me to be a part of the virtual tour of the book. It was truly an honor to be one of the selected six bloggers to be able to do this.

This was a super quick easy read. I was able to read through it rather quickly.

Its a teen issue that I am sure teens are always struggling with that is shoplifting.

Adele is a thirteen year old girl. Her mother has sent her to the store to pick up somethings for dinner. While she is in the check out line she spots a pack of banana flavored gum and puts it in her bag. As she is waiting she daydreams about her dead sister. When its her turn she puts all the items on the counter and mistakenly forgets the gum.

Will she get caught?

I really enjoyed reading this book as well as the other books in the series (stay tuned for upcoming reviews of these) and I loved the concept of the books. Its two books in one and all with an important message in them. I think this would make a great gift for young adults to know they aren't alone or going through it on their own.

Annick Press has also set up a web page dedicated to the Single Voice books and you can check it the Single Voice website for more info.

I am also very honored to include a trailer for the books which is being released today.

My Own Personal Soap Opera Review

TITLE: My Own Personal Soap Opera
AUTHOR: Libby Malin
PUB DATE: April 2010
PUBLISHER: Source Books
PAGES: 326

ABOUT THE BOOK:
Is life stranger than fiction, or vice versa?

Frankie McNally has found the perfect solution for life’s perplexing problems: as head writer for the daytime soap Lust for Life, she works them out on the air!

Meanwhile, Frankie’s being courted simultaneously by the dashing older man sent in to save the show’s sagging ratings and by the soap’s totally hot leading man. And just when Frankie thinks the plot couldn’t get more complicated, a jewel thief starts copying the show’s storyline-a development that could send the show’s ratings soaring, if it doesn’t get Frankie arrested first.

Please note that photo and about the book was taken from Source Books website.

MY THOUGHTS:

I have to say that I really enjoyed My Own Personal Soap Opera.

When I was looking up the author to find out more about her I discovered that she has written several books. She also writes under the name Libby Sternberg. I will definitely check out more of her work as I enjoyed reading this book.

Who doesn't love a soap opera? I use to be a big time fan of Another World and Days Of Our Lives.

My very first brush with a soap opera actor was my all time favorites even to this very day:

(Sorry for the poor quality as my scanner isn't working all that great.) This was taken in the early 1990's. I was visiting my sister in Montreal and she found out that Mathew Ashford (Jack from Days)was going to be here attending the auto show. She got me tickets to go. I was in such awe of him.

So back to the my thoughts on the book. Frankie is the head writer for the soap opera Lust For Life and the ratings are dropping. She is trying to get the show back on track. With a risk that the show will be cancelled a handsome older man, Victor is brought in to try and bring the ratings back up.

But before they know it what appears to be a soap opera story line is actually happening in the real world. Someone has stolen an idea from Lust and carrying it into the reality. What can it be? Who is behind it? Will they discover who the person is?

My two favorite parts of the book were when Frankie was talking to her friend Gail and she was remembering how they met: (page 78)
Gail and Frankie had met at an author reading at Columbia.
It just goes to show that you will be surprised what can come out of an author reading. This is how I met Donna from Books Bound. We only discovered this after we had met.

My other favorite part is: (page 173)
Victor could speed-read through bland reports and digest complex material with diligent attention to detail. But he felt like he had to use toothpicks to keep his eyes open when reading through Brian Aiglans's "masterpiece." More then once as he sat at his desk, feet propped up and coffee at the ready, he felt like throwing the thing across the room, or at least taking it back to the bookstore and asking for a refund.

Brian is Frankie's ex husband and he has written a book. How many times have you read a book and felt this way?

I have to send a big thank you to Danielle at Source Books for sending me an advance readers copy of this book to read and review.

Since we are on the topic of soap opera's, I have one more meeting to share with you. My little northern NB town was lucky enough to bring in a few stars from Another World. I unfortunately didn't get to meet them all because trying to convince my father to bring me into town was hard and he thought it wasn't necessary to see them. The ones who came were: Amanda (Sandra Ferguson),Cass (Stephen Schnetzer)and a few others.

Then in 1995, I actually got to meet Grayson McCouch. He played Morgan, Cass's brother and now plays Dusty on As The World Turns. This meeting to was one of my all time favorites. I was in my early 20s when I met him and very nervous and he was so super sweet. It was funny meeting with him. The mall had brought him in and you could get your picture taken with him and the sale of the picture was going to the hospital.

I had paid my money and when it was my turn I went over he had put his arm around me and I froze. My friend was laughing because she thought it was funny. He was talking to me saying to put my arm around him and I couldn't so he told the guy he wasn't to take the picture unless I did it. (Which I have to say was really sweet of him as I am sure others wouldn't have cared and just snapped the picture) Well needless to say I did end up doing it. He was super sweet and for a few years afterwards we actually kept in touch. (My friend and I gave him a card and our addresses were in it.)Then when Another World ended we lost touch and I think my moving to Montreal too had a part in it.

Do you have any meetings like this? Have you meet anyone famous?

Magna Review (Scenarios 3)

TITLE: Magna Scenarios 3
AUTHOR: Nicole O'Dell
PUB DATE: April 2010
PUBLISHER: Barbour Books
PAGES: 192

ABOUT THE BOOK:
Molly Jacobs isn’t sure what she should do: Should she follow
through with stealing some clothes for her friends from Magna—the trendy girls’
clothing store where she works? Or should she do what she knows is right, even
if it means losing her new found popularity? Girls ages 10 to 15 make
the choice in this interactive story and see how the consequences change Molly’s
life. Includes a contract and prayer to remind the reader of the importance of
making godly decisions.

MY THOUGHTS:
This is the third book in the scenarios series.

Molly is your typical teenager in high school. She is with her friends (Sara and Jess) complaining about clothes and how they all look Junior high-ish. They girls decide that they should all get jobs since they are old enough to get work permits (if their parents sign the forms). They quickly work on a list of where they could work, they decide on a clothing store because not only would they get paid but they would get a discount.

With the okay to work the girls know just where they want to apply, Magna. They all get a call for an interview but only Molly gets hired.

Molly quickly realizes she has a knack for fashion and putting together great looks. This impresses Donna, the manager. Molly has the knack for thinking of the customers need but yet has the knack for adding on to the sale. This is a great quality management likes and can bring you up in a job.

Being in a higher position brings on additional responsibility and friends she didn't know she had such as the popular girls in the school when they realize where she works. When her friends and her so called friends ask for favors, will Molly help them out or will she say no?

Molly is your typical teenager she wants the friends, to fit in and to have it all but with that there comes a price, will this cost her everything?

I really enjoyed this book. Funny enough I was thinking as a teen and knew shew would make the wrong choice but happy that she came clean in the end. I am sure most teens wouldn't. I think most teens don't realize that there are consequences to your actions when you make the wrong choice.

I asked the neighborhood girls what they would do and the majority said they wouldn't bow to the peer pressure and stand their ground because they said eventually you would get caught and the guilt would eat away at you. So I guess some teen girls would do the right thing.

Making Waves (Scenarios 4) Review

TITLE: Making Waves Book 4 in the Scenarios Series
AUTHOR: Nicole O'Dell
PUB DATE: April 2010
PUBLISHER: Barbour Books
PAGES: 192

Thanks to Angie from Barbour Books for sending this to me to read & review and a special thank you to Nicole for contacting me asking if I would review her books.

Please note that the book cover was taken from Barbour Books website and the book description came from http://www.nicoleodell.com/.

ABOUT THE BOOK:
Kate Walker joins the swim team and becomes obsessed with
practice and making it through the championships with flying colors. What will
Kate do when she s faced with pressure from her teammates to take an illegal
substance that will help her swim multiple events in their championship meet?
Girls ages 10 to 15 make the choice in this interactive story and see how the
consequences of the alternate endings change Kate's life. Includes a contract
and prayer to remind the reader of the importance of making godly decisions.

MY THOUGHTS:
After reading these books I always walk away with "Gee I wish I had this kind of book when I was a teen."

I actually met Nicole on twitter last year and she asked me right away if I would be interested in being part of her virtual book tour for Truth or Dare and All That Glitters. So earlier this year when she contacted me again about reviewing her next two books in the series I couldn't resist. I really enjoy her books and I love the message in each one. I think these are great books for teens girls to read.

We were all teens once and we all went through the same things that most teens go through today and we struggle with making the right decisions and if we make the wrong decision then we struggle with the consequences of that decision.

Thankfully with these books Nicole gives the reader two choices, the right one and the wrong one. You can read what happens when you make the right choice and then you can go back and read if you decide that wrong one. Its two books in one.

In Making Waves, Kate is a young girl who is missing her sister Julie (she just got married) and her best friend Olivia. Olivia moved to Chicago because her dad got a promotion. Feeling sad and alone Kate decides to go for a swim. Its when she is swimming that she realizes she could be swimming all year long. She decides to join the school swim team.

She tries out and makes the team. She knew she was good but never realized how good she was until she is told and put in the spot light. You can see Kate struggling with her new found fame and being the center of attention which she doesn't like because she doesn't want to take away from her other team mates. She is trying to keep an equal balance in her life and trying to do it all but she quickly realizes she can't keep up.

What will Kate do? Can she remain strong and do whats right or will being the best be her down fall?

UP COMING BOOKS:
Sadly when I went looking for the next books in the series I discovered they are only coming out in the spring of 2011.

Book 5-High Stakes
Book 6-Essence of Lilly

McKenzie's Montana Mystery Review

PUB DATE: March 2010
PUBLISHER: Barbour Books
PAGES: 158

ABOUT THE BOOK:
When Bailey and McKenzie arrive to help at a horse ranch in
Montana, they’re immediately entrenched in mysteries: a horse disappearing into
thin air, spookiness in an abandoned western town, and ranch hand upheaval. And
with all the unexpected action going on, how will they ever find time to prepare
for their rodeo competitions? Can the Camp Club Girls successfully combine their
skills to help Bailey and McKenzie save the ranch…and the rodeo for Sunshine
Stables?

MY THOUGHTS:

This is the 3rd book in the Camp Club Girls series.

I have been very lucky and got to read and review Mystery At Discovery Lake (Book 1) and Sydney's DC Discovery (book 2). This is such a great series for the middle grade girl readers. There is always a mystery in each book that the girls decide to solve.

McKenzie is working at a horse ranch called Sunshine Stables and she is also training for the barrel racing. She has no idea but she is about to be surpised by Bailey. Bailey is also going to be working at the horse ranch for a little bit.

Its not to long after Bailey arrives that Emma's (owner of Sunshine Stables) prized horse, Diamond Girl is missing. With no clues or leads the girls decide that this is a mystery for the Camp Club Girls. McKenzie and Bailey look for clues that will lead them to who ever is responsible for the disappearance of Diamond Girl.

What I love about these books is that it seems like all the clues point to one person and then at the end bam its someone you didn't think of right away to begin with. I love that kind of surprise ending.

Will McKenzie and Bailey find out who took Diamond Girl and why?

UPCOMING TITLES:
-Alexis and the Sacramento Surpise (book 4) March 2010 pub date
-Kate's Philadelphia Frenzy (book 5) May 2010 pub date
-Bailey's Peoria Problem (book 6) May 2010 pub date

I just checked out the website for Camp Club Girls http://www.campclubgirls.com/ and the series is now up to 24 books. All coming out later this year and into next year and it seems like every two months two books are being released.

I can't wait to read all of the books in this series.

Special thanks to Angie Brillhart of Barbour Publishing, Inc. for sending me a review copy and for First Wild Card Tours for allowing me to be a part of this tour.

AND NOW...THE FIRST CHAPTER:

The whole world has gone maroon. The bricks are maroon, the dress code is maroon, and even our peppy tour guide’s hair is dyed a deep maroon. -

“Hi, I’m Kiki, and I’m a real student here.” She grins from ear to ear as she walks backward across the giant lawn. “Welcome to the home of the Harvard Crimson.”

Pardon me. The whole world has gone crimson . The parents and prospective students around me press forward, following after our tour guide, but I slowly edge toward the back, hoping the rest of my family doesn’t notice.

The Great McGee Family College Tour is finally winding down, and not a moment too soon. We started off last week at Duke, then drove up to see Johns Hopkins, Penn, Princeton, Columbia, and Yale. This morning we got up early to do MIT, and if I can survive a little longer, we’ll check Harvard off the list and only have Cornell to go. Dad and I talked Mom out of Dartmouth. Way too much snow.

I thought it would be fun to tour colleges, but I didn’t realize everybody was going to ask me the same question again and again: “What do you want to do with your life, Riley?” Or sometimes they stick to, “What’s your passion, Riley?” And I haven’t figured out how to answer them. Somehow, “I have no earthly idea” doesn’t seem to be what they’re looking for.

“We are now entering the famous Harvard Yard.” The group falls silent, almost reverent, and Kiki stops on the other side of the crimson-bricked archway and waits while we file through. As she recaps the history of the university, which involves a bunch of dead white guys—just like every other school, Mom spies me slouching low at the back of the crowd.

“Isn’t this beautiful?” She takes a deep breath and closes her eyes. “I could really see you being happy here, Riley.” I nod because it’s easier than trying to explain. “Did you know the Latin word veritas on the seal”—she holds out a brochure for me—“means truth?” She flips the brochure open and starts paging through photos of students sitting under autumn trees.

I put my pointer finger over my lips, then point at Kiki. Mom nods and jogs back to my brother, Michael, who has Asperger’s syndrome, or high-functioning autism. Mom and Dad have done a ton of work to help him with his social skills, but he’s still prone to legendary meltdowns. After the scene he caused at MIT this morning, she’s been watching him like a hawk.

“This really seems like a good one.” Dad comes up behind me in a sneak attack. I glance across the group and see Michael pulling on Mom’s hand, trying to get over to a statue of a seated man. “These kids seem like your kind of people.”

Dad and I look around the yard at the students hauling mattresses and carrying plastic crates stuffed with junk. A group lounges on the steps of one of the historic buildings, drinking from eco-friendly metal thermoses.

I shrug and pull my short hair into a pathetic ponytail. Not my best look, but it’s sweltering today.

“Do you like it better than Princeton?”

I try to avoid his stare, but he follows my eyes until I give in and focus on him. In the weak afternoon sunlight, I notice that the gray patches at his temples are spreading through his warm brown hair, like two silver streaks down his head.

“I don’t know. Princeton was fine.” Princeton is Ana’s thing, her dream. All I could think about the entire time I was there was, How did she choose this school? How did she know it was for her? Is there a feeling you get? Is it like how I knew about Tom?

Kiki climbs a few steps up to an old brick building and claps excitedly. “Massachusetts Hall is special for two reasons.” She beams at our group and holds up one finger. “First, it’s the oldest building on campus, dating back to 1720.” Everyone in our group oohs, and Mom whispers something to another mother. “And”—Kiki makes eye contact with the prospective students in her pack—“it’s a freshman dorm! Let’s go take a look, shall we?”

We walk in a tight-knit pack up the stairs and down the third-floor hallway. Loud music pours from the rooms, the beats clashing. Finally we stop at a dorm room with two neatly made beds and two tidy desks with crimson folders emblazoned with the Harvard seal. I realize there’s nothing real about this room or this choreographed moment, like almost every moment of every college tour we’ve taken. How am I supposed to get a feel for the campus with these phony experiences?

As Kiki begins explaining dorm security, I slip out of the room and try to collect my thoughts. This is merely a minor case of butterflies, nothing more. I’m sure everybody gets them when touring colleges. I’ll call Ana, and she’ll talk me through this.

I rummage through my purse, searching under all the brochures and school spirit junk until my fingers find my phone’s smooth edges.

Wait, I can’t call Ana. She loved every second of her college tour. When she came back from the East Coast a few weeks ago, she couldn’t stop talking about Princeton’s amazing science labs. Plus, she already knows beyond a shadow of a doubt she wants to be a neonatal surgeon. She had open-heart surgery as a baby and has always felt called to follow the path of the doctors who saved her life.

Zoe would totally get it. I scroll through my contacts, all the way down to Z .

But maybe it isn’t fair to call Zo. Her parents are doing a little better, but money is still tight. She didn’t get to go on a college tour this summer, and I’m not really sure there’s any money put aside for her education. I’d be a jerk to call and complain.

I scroll back up to Christine. She’s headed to New York next year to become a painter. All she’s ever wanted is to get out of Half Moon Bay. We’ve always understood each other in that way.

But as I’m pressing the button for her name, I remember that today is Tyler’s birthday and she was going to surprise him with a scavenger hunt through town.

That leaves one person. I find his name and quickly punch the button. “Pick up, pick up,” I chant quietly. A voice in my head reminds me I shouldn’t be calling my ex-boyfriend, the only guy I ever loved, the one who went off to college and left me behind, but I try to quiet it. All these months I’ve been strong and not e-mailed him, not called him, but I don’t have anyone else right now.

“Hey there.” Tom’s deep voice is a little scratchy, like he just woke up, and it sends a shiver down my spine. The guys at Marina Vista still sound like chipmunks. “How… What’s up?” he asks.

Technically the breakup a few months ago was mutual—technically. I want to talk to him, but it’s just as friends. He’s already gone through the whole college application process, so he’ll help me get my head on straight.

“I hate Harvard.” A woman glares at me as she passes down the hall. I lower my voice. “Well, I don’t hate Harvard—that’s not it. My parents love it, and the teachers all love it. Actually, everybody loves it except me.”

“What are you talking about?” He yawns loudly.

“I’m on my college tour, standing in the hallowed halls of Harvard right now. Well, a dorm hallway anyway.” Two girls pass me, talking loudly. “They want me to go here, but it doesn’t feel right.”

“So don’t apply. You’re not like everybody else.”

I bite my lip. It’s such a Tom thing to say and exactly what I need to hear. After months of not talking, he still knows how to make me feel better. Tom always put the Miracle Girls on edge, but they never got to see this side of him, the big heart hidden inside his chiseled chest.

The noisy tour group pours out of the dorm room, and Kiki ushers them toward the exit at the end of the hall, pointing at some posters on the wall. Mom spots me on the phone and motions for me to rejoin the group.

“It’s funny that you called,” Tom says. “I actually wanted to tell you something.”

The tour group files into the stairwell. Dad lingers for a moment, frowning, and then goes with them.

“I’m transferring to UCSF and moving back to San Francisco.”

“What?” I press my finger to my ear, trying to block out the noise in the hall. That can’t be right. I’ve just gotten used to him being in Santa Barbara, which isn’t that far, but far enough for him to feel really and truly gone from my life.

“Santa Barbara wasn’t working out, and now I can live at home and save some cash.”

My heart begins to pound.

“I miss my old friends, you know—crazy blond girls who call me out of the blue and stuff. I miss… talking.”

My pulse drums loudly in my ears.

Mom peeks her head back in the door and widens her eyes at me. “You’re missing everything!”

“I—” I wave at Mom. “I’ve got to run, but I’ll call you later.” I snap the phone shut before he can respond and chuck it back into my purse. He’s coming back? I lean my head against the wall to keep it from spinning.

“Riley!” Mom plants her hands on her hips.

“Coming.” I jog over to her lingering in the stairwell. I file in at the back of the group and wind down the few flights of stairs with Mom hot on my heels. I can’t think about Tom now. I’ll deal with that later, once I’m back home and I’ve had time to wrap my mind around the fact that he isn’t gone, that his voice almost sounded like it used to before we drifted apart.

We re-enter the Harvard Yard, the sun stinging my eyes, and Kiki yammers on and on about the different types of architecture, pointing out stuff like Doric columns and neoclassical facades.

It’s not that Harvard isn’t beautiful. The campus is historic and hallowed and dripping in ivy, and there’s no question that it’s one of the best colleges in the country. If I went here, I’d get a great education, have opportunities I’d never get anywhere else, and meet all kinds of new, fascinating friends….

My mind flashes to Half Moon Bay, the faces of the Miracle Girls.

I can’t believe that in a year this is going to be my life. This could be my freshman dorm, but looking out over this crowded lawn, I can’t picture it. I try to imagine myself lounging in the courtyard, heading to fascinating lectures, eating in the dining hall, but my brain refuses. The only life I can imagine is at Marina Vista, hanging out with the girls, being close when Michael needs me.

Mom grins at me as Kiki explains how the meal plans work.

They think I want to go to Harvard, but I don’t. They think I’m excited about this, but I’m scared out of my mind. They think they know the real Riley McGee, but even I haven’t met her. They think I have it all figured out, but I’m totally lost.

So much for veritas .

Happy Birthday

I find it hard to believe that today Michael is 7 years old. It honestly just feels like yesterday he was a new born.
This photo, I have to apologize for it, as it was originally taken with a 35mm camera and I had to scan it. This is Michael when we brought him from the hospital. He was probably 4-5 days old here. He had jaundice and he was so tiny. To let you know how tiny he was, the baby clothes we brought 0-3 months, he was swimming in them. We had to go out and buy preemie outfits.

This is Michael today. A peace, love and happiness kind of boy.
Happy 7th Birthday my sweet little guy.

Dear Diary, I'm Pregnant Review

TITLE: Dear Diary, I'm Pregnant: Ten Real Life Stories
AUTHOR: AnRenee Englander
PUB DATE: April 2010
PUBLISHER: Annick Press
PAGES: 160

ABOUT THE BOOK:
You’re a teenager. You’re pregnant. Now what?

In
poignant and insightful interviews, Anrénee Englander presents the voices of ten
pregnant teens as they discuss their experiences and choices around motherhood,
adoption and abortion. First published to critical acclaim in 1997, this new
edition contains the original interviews as well as d material including a
resources section. Presenting different points of view, DEAR DIARY, I’M PREGNANT
is a non-judgmental source of information for all teens that provides support
and guidance for those who find themselves in this situation.Chosen by The New
York Public Library’s “Books for the Teen Age” list and hailed by The Globe and
Mail for its “…frank, revealing and brave conversations,” this is a must-read
book for young women looking for reassurance that they are not alone.

MY THOUGHTS:

This is a revised edition and it was first published in 1997.
I think being a teenager is hard but when you throw in a pregnancy its even harder. The book is about ten real life stories. All the stories were very touching and heart breaking. None of these girls planned to get pregnant and we all forced with three decisions, keep the baby, give the baby up for adoption or have an abortion.
The girls all range from 14 to 19 and they were from all walks of life.
I think what bothered me the most was in the some of the stories their families kicked them out leaving the girls to fend for themselves with no money or a place to go. I am sure it must be a shock to the family when that happens but I just can't see as a parent kicking my child out.
I would recommend this book to any parent with teenage kids to read. I think we need to have an open line of communication with our children and let them know that they can come to us with any problem no matter how small or big it is. I think we need to let our kids know that we will love them no matter what and hey everyone makes mistakes and that we shouldn't turn our backs on them.
I think what is great about the book is that AnRenee added a resource section in the back with numbers for Hotlines both in Canada and the US as well as info about finding about about adoption, abuse, etc.

style, these true stories tackle the universal experiences from childhood and
adolescence that stay with us forever. Each anecdote, and accompanying
reflection, reveals how individual identity can be shaped by common themes of
growing up. By turns thoughtful, painful, funny and fierce, I.D. powerfully
demonstrates that what happens to define us in youth doesn’t have to confine us
forever.

MY THOUGHTS:

Kate Scowen is the other of two other books called: My Crazy Life and My Kind of Sad. I have never read her precious books but I am thinking that I just might look for them.

i.d Stuff That Happens To Define Us is a book that contains 12 first person accounts about things that happen in our lives growing up from childhood to adolescence.

Of all the 12 stories the one that hit home for me were Broken Hearted. We all remember our first loves and Broken Hearted is about that. Its about a boy who is 16 years old and basically has no luck with the girls. His luck changes when he meets a girl from another school at a dance. He meets a girl and falls in love. The are having a good time for two months and they go to the prom together. She leaves her purse in the car and he goes to return it only to discover his girlfriend making out with another guy. Needless to say you know where this goes.

For me it didn't happen like that or maybe it did and I didn't know. I have to clarify that, for me I met this guy and he was visiting from another province and staying at his grandparents for the summer. For me it was "love" and I was heart broken when he had to return home at the end of the summer. Thankfully with the technology that is available today I have been able to reconnect with him and we are the best of friends so 20 years later. Who would have thought?

What I loved about the book was the fact that the illustrator, Peter Mitchell added illustrations to accompany the book and they all suited the story perfectly. Kate also included a resource section with Hotline numbers for both Canada and the US, books and websites links for kids who are in need of advise or help.

I want to thank Annick Press for sending me i.d Stuff That Happens to Define Us to read and review.

Through Thick and Thin Book 2 London Chronicles Review

TITLE: Through Thick & Thin (London Chronicles)
AUTHOR: Sandra Byrd
PUBLISHER: Tyndale
PUB DATE: March 2010
PAGES: 271

ABOUT THE BOOK:

Savvy Smith, 15, sees her chance to write a full column in the paper,
making her name and making her way in her new hometown near London, England. But
the choices she faces when given the chance to choose between friends, family,
and fame may turn her dream into a nightmare. London Confidential is a new
series where British fashion, friendships, and guys collide, and an all-American
girl learns to love life and live out her faith.

From the Back Cover
My assignment was clear. I had to find a way
into that photo shoot. And then get Jack to allow me to write a feature article
for the Wexburg Academy Times. Savvy Smith, 15, sees her chance to write a full
column in the paper, making her name and making her way in her new hometown near
London, England. But the choices she faces when given the chance to choose
between friends, family, and fame may turn her dream into a nightmare. London
Confidential: Where British fashion, friendships, and guys collide, and where an
all-American girl learns to love life and live out her faith.

MY THOUGHTS:

Earlier this month I was given the chance to read and review Asking For Trouble which is the first book in a new series by author Sandra Byrd called the London Chronicles. I loved this book so much that I rushed out to buy book 2 Through Thick & Thin.
Savvy is still writing the column Asking For Trouble for the Wexburg Academy school newspaper and its going really well. No one knows who is writing except for Jack.
Savvy is dying to have her own byline in the paper and is trying so hard to get it. When she hears about a fashion photo shoot with her favorite designer Peter Chen she decides she has to get in and hopefully get the article.
She quickly realizes that the photo shoot is being done at an Aristocrat's (popular kid's) estate. She realizes getting in won't be as easy as she thinks. She has to work and prove that she is worthy of attending this event.
Savvy decides that she must look the part, she needs new clothes. When she asks her parents to take her into London they are busy and can't. She looks around at the shops in town but quickly realizes nothing will do. Whats a girl to do? Will she sneak off to London to do some shopping?
With a new look for every Friday she finally gets the nod of approval from the aristocrats. She gets her ticket into the shoot and is excited. Although her excitement is short lived when the one person she was hoping could help her can't and she is forced to take someone who is basically fashion challenged.
Will she get that by line or will a secret come back to haunt her?

I am anxiously awaiting book 3 and 4 which will be coming out soon. Here is a sneak peak at the covers. I couldn't find dates of when they will be released but I am hoping really soon.

April Friends of The Library Booksale/Books Bought #39

As a booklover I love going to booksales especially ones that are Friends of the Library. With the Friends of the Library 100% of the sales from the donated or old library books that are sold goes back into the library. Funds raised at this year’s event will go towards developing a new Discovery Centre for young people at the Library.

Recently Linda from Better With Books brought this booksale to our attention. The library is the Dorval Library. Which is roughly a 10 minute car ride from my house.

This is the first time I have attended this booksale but it won't be my last. I was really impressed with the selection of books and honestly going the first day with the first few hours was well worth it. The selection was great. It was nice to see that so many books were donated.

I met up with Tina Bookshipper and Linda Better With Books on Thursday, day one of the booksale. Both Tina and Linda were there before me and when I met up with them they both had a good amount of books. Off I went to look.

I got:
-two videos:
Free Willy 1-2-3 and Muppets Take
Manhatten.(I couldn't pass up on this one)
-11 Mangas:
Hack-The legend of Twilight vol 1-2/Planet Ladder vol 1-2-3/ Culdcept vol 1-2-3-4/Faeries Landing vol 1/fushigi yugi: the mysterious play vol 1
-9 books:
-All American Girl by Meg Cabot
-Hex marks the spot & no rest for the wiccan by
Madelyn Alt
-Shakespeare's Counselor & Dead over heels by Charlaine Harris
-Sex in the City & 4 Blondes by Candace bushnell
-Summer Boys by Hailey
Abbott
-Heartbreak and Triumph by Shawn Michaels

All that for $13 CAN

Okay I have to admit that I went back again today to see if there was anything good. This is what I saw when I pulled into the parking lot. I guess the ducks wanted to see what was there too.

I managed to find;
- 3 cds: Savage Garden's Affirmation, Five For
Fighting's The Battle of Everything and Backstreet Boys's Backstreet's
Back.
-3 softcovers: The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova, Impulse by
Ellen Hopkins and Little White Lies by Gemma Townley
-6 kids books for
Michael and its Captain Underpants 1-5. (I have been eyeing these in the stores
for awhile and was thinking of getting them for him) and The adventures of super
diaper baby. (its a graphic novel) All that came up to $9 CAN.

It wasn't raining when I came out so I decided to walk around and snap some pictures.

They were taken on the ground of the library.

On My Wishlist #12

On My Wishlist is a weekly meme that is hosted by Book Chick City. Its a great weekly meme that highlights a book or books that you might have on your wish list.
They Call Me Naughty Lola: Personal Ads from the London Review of BooksSexually, I'm More of a Switzerland: More Personal Ads from the London Review of Books

I heard about Sexually, I'm More of a Switzerland by David Rose from Luanne at Luanne-A Book Worms World blog in her Over the Counter post. So when I went to Amazon to look up this book I also discovered that he wrote They Call me naughty Lola along with a bunch of other books.
I don't know how good they are but they sound interesting. When I was in my 20's my friend and I would always get a laugh out of some of the personal ads that our paper ran but since the internet has become so popular they no longer run these ads.

This is what is On My Wishlist this week what do you have?

The Cinderella Society Review

TITLE: The Cinderella Society
AUTHOR: Kay Cassidy
PUB DATE:
April 2010
PAGES: 336

ABOUT THE BOOK:
Sixteen-year-old Jess Parker survives by staying invisible. After nine schools in ten years, she's come to terms with life as a perpetual new girl, neither popular nor outcast. At Mt. Sterling High, Jess gets the chance of a lifetime: an invitation to join The Cinderella Society, a secret club of the most popular girls in school, where makeovers are the first order of official business. But there's more to being a Cindy than just reinventing yourself from the outside, a concept lost on Jess as she dives tiara-first into creating a hot new look.

With a date with her popular crush and a chance to finally fit in, Jess's life seems to be a perfect fairy tale. That is until the Wickeds--led by Jess's archenemy--begin targeting innocent girls in their war against the Cindys, and Jess discovers her new sisterhood is about much more than who rules Mt. Sterling High School. It's a centuries-old battle of good vs. evil, and the Cindys need Jess on special assignment. But when the mission threatens to destroy her new dream life, Jess is forced to choose between this dream realized and honoring the Sisterhood. What's a girl to do when the glass slipper fits, but she doesn't want to wear it anymore?

MY THOUGHTS:
The Cinderella Society is being released today and I was lucky enough to get an ARC of this book. The next book is suppose to be released sometime in 2011.

This is Kay Cassidy's debut novel. I really enjoyed the book and had a hard time to put it down.

Jess is just your typical girl trying to fit into a new school. We discover that in the world there are Cinderella's, Wickeds and Reggies. Cinderella's are the good girls, the Wickeds are the bad girls and the Reggies are just your regular people, like me.

The Wickeds want to rule the world and dominate over everyone and they basically will step on anyone who gets in there way and they use the Reggies to spy and to control them. Enter the secret society of Cinderella's. They want to bring good to the world one step at time.

Jess is tormented by Lexy on a daily bases and Jess always wonders when Lexy will get tired of tormenting her. Lexy's other victim is Heather. Lexy is the common bond for these two girl and Jess tells Heather that its okay to stand up to Lexy and not let her blackmail her. That basically once your secret is out Lexy has no control over her.

When Jess is invited to be a part of the Cinderella Society she is happy and excited to be a part of something good and hopes that she can bring good to the Reggies. In order to be a Cinderella there is a whole book of things you must do and follow and one of those things is to look the part. Which means a whole new make over.

With the new make over she attracts the attention of a popular guy, Ryan who just happens to be Lexy's brother. Jess is happy to finally be fitting into something. Ryan appears to be the your typical guy who is good looking and keeps his sensitive side hidden not even letting Jess see the real him.

How will Jess handle the new situation she is placed in and will she be surprised when she learns who the other ladies are that have been part of the Cinderella society? Will she risk it all to save the reggies?

Thanks to Egmont USA for sending me a copy of this book to read and review.

Author(s) Meet Up and Books Bought #38

When I got asked to review Spin earlier in January (2010) I was really excited because I found out that Catherine McKenzie was a local author. I love supporting local authors.

Shortly into January I got an email saying that Catherine was going to be doing a book signing at Chapters/Indigo down town. I was super excited and ready to go, but unfortunately I was still sick and didn't want to chance going down in fear I would cough to death or make others around me sick so I stayed home. I was disappointed.

Then in March I got another note saying that Catherine was going to be doing another signing at the Chapters near me in April. I quickly marked it down and pre warned everyone in advance that I was going to get my copy signed.

Donna from BooksBound came with me and she took the picture of Catherine and me.

It was really nice as we got to speak to Catherine and she is working on her second book which is going to be coming out in January 2011. Can't wait to read it. I also got to meet her mother who stopped by as well. Catherine is just as sweet and nice in person as she is via twitter @CEMcKenzie1 and emails.

Another local author, Laura Fabiani was there to show Catherine support. I read her book Daughter of Mine in January, 2009. I got to meet Laura when she delivered her book for me to read.

I knew that Laura was coming so I was on the look out for her. We finally got to meet up and talked. Laura also is working on her next book which will be a trilogy dealing with time travel I believe. Another upcoming book to look forward to.

Laura is another one of those authors that its always a pleasure to speak with via emails and she is just as nice in person. I have to thank Catherine for taking this picture of Laura and I.

BOOKS BOUGHT:
Of course no trip to Chapters can be complete without buying books. I did buy a few books, four in total but ended up returning three of them on Monday. I kept The Reckoning by Kelley Armstrong. As that was the one I had intended to buy before walking into the store.

Dewey's Read-a-Thon Update

Nice RecoveryThis is I guess my second update from this morning.

After reading Through Thick and Thin by Sandra Byrd I was suppose to take a half hour break but that turned into an hour break. I was going to fellow read a thoners blogs and the Dewey home page checking out the mini challenges when I got side tracked so I quickly ended up getting offline.

I picked up Nice Recovery by Susan Juby to read and preceeded to read that for an hour and a half. I am about half way through that. I stopped at noon to have lunch and the quickly popped online again to check the challenges.

When I looked at the time I realized that I had to leave to pick up Donna from Books Bound because we were going to chapters to meet up with Catherine McKenzie the author of Spin. Got my book signed, picture taken and we chatted for a bit. Look for my post about this meet up this week.

While at Chapters we met up with Linda from Better With Books and her boyfriend. Linda came down to get her book signed and do to a little book shopping.

We all split up and looked around the store. I picked up a couple of books so check back this week to see what I bought. Then Donna and I went upstairs to Starbucks to get a cold drink and rest a bit.

I was looking out for Laura Fabiani the author of Daughter of Mine as she said she was popping in. I got to meet Laura last year when I reviewed her book so it was really nice to see her. I have a post to write up this week talking about it.

When I came home i quickly picked up Twilight the graphic novel by Stephenie Meyer to read before heading out to my mother's for supper. Managed to read it in about an hour. I am going to be reading Twilight this summer I think.

We didn't stay that long at my mother'g because I think Michael might be getting sick as he seems to be showing some signs. So while he watched some tv I picked up Alexis and the Sacramento Surprise and just finished it. Took me about an hour and a half to read that.

Sorry I don't have pictures to show of the books but for some reason I keep getting an error message.

Dewey's Read-a-Thon Mini Challenge

I am not sure what this mini challenge is numbered as because I quickly want to enter this one.

Bart from Bart's Bookshelf is hosting this one. Here is what his mini challenge is:

Quite simple really, I want you to pull three or four books off of your
bookshelves and use them to form a sentence, from the book titles, take a
photograph and upload it somewhere you can link to it from. (ie: your blog,
photobox, flickr any of the various twitter pic sites, facebook… etc… etc…)

He suggested you don't spend more then 10 minutes doing this one and I think I did.

Here is my sentence:

Five things I can't live without: my little red book, New york City, roses, the blue notebook and marshmallows for breakfast.

I hope that is okay if not perhaps you got a good little laugh out of it.

Dewey's Read-a-Thon Update

I started the challenge at 8am EST.
